How to obtain a Licence

Eligibility

Section 35 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 permits ERA to license 'educational establishments' or their representative bodies in the following categories:

  • Local Educational Authorities on behalf of their educational establishments, i.e. schools, media resources and teachers' centres, adult education units and off-site youth centres
  • Independent Schools
  • Colleges of Further Education
  • Universities and Colleges of Theology and Higher Education
  • Schools of Nursing and schools teaching English as a Foreign Language

ERA cannot license public libraries, commercial training organisations or educational units in museums and galleries, as these are not 'educational establishments' according to the Act.

What Next?

Most educational establishments in the UK are already licensed, either by individual Licence or as part of a blanket Licence agreement.

If you establishment is not covered by an ERA Licence, please contact ERA directly by email or by telephoning 020 7837 3222. We will double-check to ensure that you are not already licensed, and, if you are eligible for a Licence, we will forward a Licence application form to you.

Please go to the tariffs page for further information on the cost of the Licence and current blanket licensing agreements.
